AI Can't Build Your Network (But It Can Help)

Firestorm · Sep 14, 2026
I get asked about this a lot lately. Someone pulls me aside after a meeting and asks whether AI is going to change networking. Usually what they're really asking is whether AI can do the networking for them.

I understand the appeal. I've spent 30 years in business development and I'll tell you straight: building a network is slow. You put in months (sometimes years) before you see much of anything. Meanwhile there's a tool promising to find your ideal prospects, write the outreach, and book the meetings while you sleep. Of course that's tempting!

Here's the problem with it.

Friction is the point!

Think about the last time somebody did something for you that was genuinely inconvenient.

Maybe a friend drove an hour to help you move. Maybe someone you barely knew picked up the phone and made a call on your behalf. Whatever it was, you remember it. And you probably still feel like you owe them one.

Now think about the last automated email you got. You don't remember it. It cost the sender nothing, and you knew that.

That's the whole thing right there. The value of a relational deposit is directly proportional to how inconvenient it was to make. A handwritten note beats a LinkedIn message. Showing up at somebody's event beats liking the post about it. Driving across town for coffee beats the Zoom call you rescheduled twice.

AI is extraordinarily good at removing friction. In most of business, that's a gift. In relationships, the friction is the signal. Take it out and you've removed the reason the thing worked.

What actually builds a network

There's no secret to this part. You meet people. You find out what they need. You help them before you ask for anything. Then you do it again next week, and the week after that, forever!

Think about it like a bank account. You can't make a withdrawal before you've made a deposit. Most people who tell me networking didn't work for them were trying to withdraw from an account they never funded.

And deposits aren't only referrals. An introduction to the right person. A heads-up about something coming down the pike. Tickets to a game. Showing up when it matters. Those all count, and none of them require you to have a client sitting around to hand over.

It's slow. That's not a flaw in the system - that's the system working. Anything you could build in a week could be taken from you in a week.

Where AI genuinely helps

Now, I'm not anti-AI. I use it every day. It's just useful on one side of this work and useless on the other.

AI is great at the homework:

Sharpening who you're looking for. Most people describe their ideal client way too broadly. "Small business owners" isn't something anybody can actually listen for in a conversation. AI is a good sparring partner for getting from a category down to a specific situation.

Figuring out who's already in the room. Your best referral partners usually aren't people who might buy from you. They're the people sitting with your future client when the need comes up. AI can help you map that out.

Doing the research. Before a coffee meeting, spend five minutes learning what that person actually cares about. AI makes that fast.

Remembering. Follow-up is where most networking quietly dies. Use it to track who you owe, what you promised, and when you last talked.

That's all homework. The meeting is still you.

You're the special sauce

Nobody refers you because your outreach was well-written. They refer you because they know you, they like you, and they believe you'll take good care of their client. No tool generates that. It gets earned, in person, over time.

We're not trying to win at prospecting. We're trying to win at life. Don't trade a long-term win for a short-term one.
